There is a long-standing tradition among those who climb mountains in my part of the world. Often the hills, even the low ones, are covered in mist or cloud, and on many tracks and trails there is a good chance of getting lost and missing the way. So successive generations of hikers have built cairns: piles of stones, mostly quite small, marking the path, leading to a much larger pile at the summit itself – in case, in the mist, you aren’t sure whether you’ve got there or not. Many times I have almost gone off in the wrong direction in thick fog, only to see a cairn at the last moment and come back on track...
