I stopped sleepwalking some time in my mid-twenties, but I can still remember the mixture of fear and excitement I used to feel when, eventually, I would wake up. In my dream, I had been in a room, in a house, in a corridor, somewhere which was part memory, part imagination. There were people there I had to meet; there were things I had to do. But then, as I gradually emerged from sleep, I had to adjust my mind and imagination to realize that, instead of the place where I had been in my dream, I was in fact in this room, in this passage, and had to navigate my way back to my bed. Often the dream would still be powerfully present, and sometimes more appealing than the humdrum reality I actually faced. But I had to tell myself that this was the reality...
