We went to Venice last month, and marvelled again at the extraordinary achievement of the people who built that unique city many centuries ago. Just as remarkable, actually, is the achievement of those who today are propping it up and stopping it sinking into the lagoon. The whole city seems to float in its surrounding water, part river, part sea, dividing into hundreds of smaller canals as it makes its way through the ancient buildings, past curious palaces, statues, courtyards, shops and hotels ancient and modern.
