One of the worst evenings of my daughter’s young life was when she was asked to be a babysitter for some friends – a job she had often done before, happily and successfully. Unknown to them or us, the two young children were in a very cross mood, and resented their parents going out for the evening. They took out their sulks and anger on my daughter. She had a miserable time, but managed to prevent the children getting up to anything too drastically wicked. She – and, I think, the children – were extremely relieved when the evening was over...
