Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Paul’s missionary work is that when he arrived in a new town the people there had quite literally never seen anything of the sort before. They had seen other travelling teachers, but none like this. They knew of religious leaders; they knew of ethnic groups (such as the Jews) who had their own religion and sometimes welcomed outsiders; but none of them had behaved as Paul did. They had no idea that this sort of lifestyle was possible, let alone desirable...
