She came home from school with all the wide-eyed excitement of an eager eight-year-old, clutching the clarinet case to her like a favourite teddy bear. She had had her first music lesson on the new instrument that morning. She couldn’t wait to get the instrument out and show it to her parents.

She put the music carefully on the shiny new stand. She adjusted the reed the way she’d been shown. Suddenly conscious of her audience, she tried to play the little tune the teacher had taught her. As with every other beginner, some of the notes sounded right, but several came out with a squawk like a distressed hen...
