The passages from 2 Timothy and Luke 18 both envisage God’s people hanging on, sustaining their energy and sense of direction, even though things seem to go from bad to worse. By contrast, Jeremiah 31 sees through the long night to the new dawn, the new covenant which will replace the broken accord of Sinai. For once, Jeremiah offers the good news that creates hope, giving us light in the darkness, keeping us loyal in prayer (Luke) and teaching (2 Timothy)...
