Come, believe, and eat. Simple yet profound, carrying us with characteristic Johannine effortlessness from bread by the lake to the bread of life. The bridge between them is Jesus himself, who will give his flesh, that which the Word had become (1.14), for the life of the world.


The physical and spiritual, the bread Moses gave and the true bread that Jesus gives, must be held together around the person of Jesus himself. We cannot collapse it into the idea that the physical is irrelevant and the spiritual all-important. To ‘come’ to Jesus means to approach Jesus himself, not some Jesus-fantasy that could be pulled into new shapes at will...
