Just in case anyone thought the Old Testament was all gloomy and the New cheerful, here are two passages of dire warning from the New Testament preceded by a warm, redeeming invitation from the Old. Underlying both is God’s summons to accept his mercy and his way now, while there is time: ‘Seek the Lord while he may be found, call on him while he is near.’ Unstated, but powerfully implied, is the message which Isaiah has in common with Luke’s Jesus. ‘The time may come when you will wish you had.’...
