Think of the Lord’s Prayer while reading Ephesians 3. Paul prays to the Father, from whom all fatherhood ‘in heaven and on earth’ is named, that he will give us . . . all things in Christ, because to him belong the power and the glory for ever, Amen. Perhaps this, along with John 17, is one of the earliest expanded meditations on the great prayer.


If so, the bit we’re missing in the middle nicely corresponds to the story in John 6 (replacing Mark’s version in our sequence of readings). Give us this day ...
