Last night we watched a movie called Incendies about a family caught in an intracommunity conflict in Lebanon in the 1970s and 1980s. It was a fictional movie, but much of the story could be replicated in factual accounts of what happened to people during those decades. The central figure in the story is a Christian woman who had to watch members of another community murder the Muslim father of her unborn child. She was then cast out of her own community and had to give up the child. She later discovered the orphanage where her child had been taken, but it had been destroyed in the conflict, and the woman was subsequently taken captive and repeatedly raped and impregnated. One thing that infuriated her captors was the fact that she would keep singing; she became known simply as “the woman who sings.”...
