Last night we were watching the great movie Dogma, which is full of bad language, violence, and scatological humor. It is not a movie for the sensitive or fainthearted or squeamish, but it is one of the most theologically thoughtful and thought-provoking movies of all time. Its premise is that back at the time of the exodus the angel of death and another angel had rebelled against being God’s agents of judgment and had therefore been cast out of heaven. They are therefore eternally trapped on earth. But they have now discovered a loophole in Catholic doctrine that will enable them to “go home”; a church in New Jersey is promising forgiveness to anyone who walks through its arch. The problem is that if they succeed in gaining readmission to heaven on that basis, they will destroy the theological and moral fabric of reality by defeating God and getting back into heaven without repenting...
