Men can have mixed feelings about strong women, though for me strong women are not as worrying as strong men. Before my wife became disabled, she was quite capable of standing up to me; in my head I can still hear her saying, “John!” as a rebuke. I wish she were still able to say it. She was usually right, or at least plausible. In the seminary where I was the principal, on a particular occasion one of my women colleagues came to see me during a financial crisis to make me face up to the need to make a tough decision, to make someone’s post redundant and thus to fire the person. I half-knew that this was needed, but I was not facing it. For a woman, the downside to being tough may mean frightening men away; one or two great single women I have known have been tough people who had that effect on potential husbands...
