A year or two ago, a friend of mine lost his wife after she had been ill for a while, and to my horror I was aware of feeling something like satisfaction at this event because my wife had recently died after being ill for many years. Somehow my loss seemed less unfair because someone else had had the same experience. It was a horrible response to have, though it is a sufficiently well-recognized one that there is a word for it: schadenfreude, pleasure at someone else’s misfortune. (It is interesting that English didn’t have a word for it, so we had to borrow the German word.)...
