I watched the Press Gallery during the speech. For most of the time, the journalists looked bored. One was sharpening his pencil; another was varnishing her nails. Then, quite suddenly, all that changed. Notebooks were seized, shorthand phrases flew onto the paper. One began sending text messages back to base. The speech which, up to that point, had been important but not that important, had instantly turned into something that would make tomorrow’s headlines. The speaker had suddenly given a broad hint that he wasn’t just commenting about important issues that were happening that day. He was launching his campaign to be leader of his party, which meant he hoped to be Prime Minister within the next year or two...
