‘All things work together for good to those who love God.’ Probably not the first thought that sprang to Jacob’s mind the morning after his wedding, on discovering how his father-in-law had succeeded in marrying off both daughters and gaining an extra seven years’ work in a single blow. Yet in the long perspective of Genesis part of the point is to see God’s hand in the duplicity and half-faith of the patriarchs. Jacob
himself, after all, was no stranger to trickery.

The Pauline claim is always a statement of faith, part of that faith in the creator God which, looking at Jesus’ resurrection, deduces both God’s steadfast commitment to the original creation and his determination to rescue it from its bondage to decay...
