Psalm 141:4

The strong language of the psalms is not for the faint-hearted. It can repel those who come to the psalms seeking sincerely to find or to strengthen their faith. References to ‘evil’, to the ‘ungodly’ and to ‘wickedness’, and imprecations asking that the enemy should be exterminated seem to jar with the meekness of faith. This jangling language was in the hearts and mouths of these pilgrims because of what they encountered as they sought to claim the land God had promised them. The tribes that fought them were infamous for their abuse and immorality. As they journeyed from Egypt to ‘the land of milk and honey’ they were hemmed in by people whose values and beliefs were not only very different but intimidating.
