How are we to picture the crowds of people who left their homes and made their way out to the Jordan to be baptised by John the Baptist? One striking piece that I saw in a recent exhibition of art fits the bill perfectly. I see portrayed here the weird and wonderful dispositions of humanity; the light and shade, shape and texture of our stories, located within the givens and constraints, pleasure and pain, of our individual natures and social frameworks. The piece looks edgy, complex, surreal and messy because life is like that. There is a tangible sense of 'what if', 'if only' and 'surely not' in this work. To me it evokes an honest and self-aware appreciation of the context of the crowds who came out to John.
