Description

Maundy Thursday - Year B

Outline: This act of worship is best set in an ordinary room. It involves a meal. The words are
spoken by the leader.

The Leader begins:
All are welcome here. This moment is ordinary yet what we will remember in this time is
extraordinary. Imagine a room, perhaps like this room, better that we are gathered in a hall than a
church. Imagine you are a welcome guest, you bring a gift, perhaps some food, maybe wine. The
conversation is easy. You know some who are here. For those you don't introductions are made.
And then there is a pause. Take off your shoes. 'But we are not Muslims'. Nevertheless, take off
your shoes. We know what is coming, yet this feels strange and suddenly we are uncertain. That
story took place so long ago. Like so much else we have ritualised, formalised it. That was not how
it began. The feeling was unusual. Let's sing a hymn (that might clear the air). Well, we'll see. Let's
sing…

Hymn: My song is love unknown or A towel and basin

And Peter resists, we know the story, perhaps? Let us remember. Hear the story as the Gospel
according to John records it:

Reading: John 13:1-17

Hymn: Jesu, Jesu (Kneels at the feet of his friends) or God of unexpected action

Reading: John 13:21-35

Hymn: An upper room did our Lord prepare or At the table of communion

Talk: So, as we eat,…

Hymn: When my love for Christ grows weak or Filled with fear and apprehension,

Blessing: Now go with God’s blessing…

Leave is silence
