Three decades ago, the then Bishop of Durham, David Jenkins, caused near uproar among Christians with his statement that the resurrection of Jesus was just “a conjuring trick with bones”. I think, to be fair to the bishop, that he intended his hearers to look beyond the physical resurrection to all the implications of new life in Christ, and if that is so he was correct. The resurrection of Jesus is not just a restoration of life to a dead body – that had already happened on a number of occasions recorded in the Bible ( eg 2nd Kings 4 v 32-37, Mark 5 v 38-43). Jesus’ resurrection was to indestructible, eternal life – immortality - and his death and resurrection showed the way to everlasting salvation for us...
