Meditation – First Sunday of Advent Year C
Jeremiah 33: 14-16  Psalm 25: 1-10   1st Thessalonians 3: 9-13   Luke 21: 25-36

When I saw a man with a sandwich board bearing the words, “the end of the world is nigh”, I guessed he was going to a fancy dress party  ... until I saw him again the following week. Christians are cautious about talking of the end of the world/ the second coming/ final judgment for the simple reason that it seems to be the stamping ground of cults and cranks. Over the last hundred and fifty years there have been far too many failed predictions concerning Jesus’ return with some very specific dates set and subsequent great disappointment. One sect - “Jehovah’s Witnesses” - has even based its entire system of belief on the conviction that Jesus has already returned - invisibly in 1914...
