‘Who is Jesus Christ for us today?’ This is the famous question asked by Dietrich Bonhoeffer from his cell in Tegel military prison, Germany, during the last 18 months of his life. Bonhoeffer had been arrested and imprisoned by the Nazis in April 1943. He was executed by hanging in Flossenberg concentration camp on 9 April 1945. During his months in prison, letters written to his fiancée and members of his family were smuggled out and taken to Eberhard Bethge, his friend and biographer. Bethge later edited the correspondence as Letters and Papers from Prison. In his hour of greatest darkness, Bonhoeffer struggled with the question of who Jesus Christ really is. Today, this prisoner of the Nazis is widely recognised as one of the 20th century’s greatest Christian theologians…
