Aim
To encourage spiritual discipline and effort, through the analogy of an athlete.

Preparation and materials
• You might like to dress in a tracksuit and trainers or some other sporting outfit.
• Bible reading: 1 Corinthians 9.24 –27.

Assembly
1. Ask the students how many of them followed the 2006 Olympics in Athens (or a recent sporting event).
2. Talk about the achievements of the athletes. Discuss the amount of preparation undertaken by each competitor. Similar strenuous training was known to people around the time of Jesus.
3. St Paul, author of many of the letters in the New Testament, wrote the following passage about the training of an athlete. His readers were Christians living in the Greek city of Corinth...
