Poem: This is my child

This is my child – and yet he is not mine.
He is a special boy and though I fathered him
I will not claim him as my own for he belongs to God.
The miracle that brought him here was a promise fulfilled,
but not to me alone, or to my wife.
We are his parents and his early care belongs to us,
but he will not be ours for ever.
God has sent this child into the world for a purpose
and that will take him far from us
and lead him down dangerous roads
that may result in sacrifice, even death.
But we are old
and we may never see the outcome of our parenthood;
may never be able to watch his struggling and suffering;
never see the destiny set before him.
