Pebble-I-be

Description

Let me tell you who I be,
I be pebble, me,
Pebble-I-be.

By the town spring, here lies me,
By Jacob’s well in Sychar,
Pebble-I-be.

Watching the travellers, curiosity,
Dirty and thirsty ones
Pebble-I-be.

Rolled around by sandals, trodden-on-me,
I feel how worn their soles are though
Pebble-I-be.

Stranger comes for water, hardness melts in me –
He makes me feel like singing
Pebble-I-be.

Fancy-sandalled woman, well-known to me
Here to draw her water
Pebble-I-be.

“Sister, I am thirsty”, with dusty sigh says he
“I need some of your water”
Pebble-I-be.

I see her troubled eyes, she’s as shocked as me-
He doesn’t know the way things are
Pebble-I-be.
