Meditation/monologue: Misunderstanding

They were so innocent, those disciples. Seated at the table with a traitor, they had no idea what Judas was about to do, in spite of what Jesus was saying to them.
How could they sit there and listen to his words – hear him saying that the one who would betray him would be the one given the bread dipped in the dish – and then totally ignore the fact that Jesus gave the bread to Judas?
What were they thinking of? It was as plain as the nose on your face that he was pointing to Judas, and yet they could only interpret it that Jesus was telling him to go out and buy food for the poor? What planet were they on? Why couldn’t they get it into their silly heads that Jesus was giving them the answer to the question they’d asked, ‘You’ve said one of us will betray you, then who is it?’
