Dan Brown’s bestseller The Da Vinci Code is now a movie, directed by Ron Howard and starring
Tom Hanks.  This ultimate page-turner is a pretty good story.  A Harvard professor called Robert
Langdon and Sophie Neveu, a cyrptographer, work out that the secret of the Holy Grail is that
Jesus married Mary Magdelene and that his bloodline continues today.
 
I am torn about this book.  I enjoyed reading it and it entertained me on a dull train journey, but I
teach theology at the University of Durham and it reminded me of a particularly bad first-year’s
essay.  Some of the factual mistakes made me laugh, while others made me wince.  
 
If this book was a work of fiction, then I would have no problem with it, but Brown claims at the
beginning that there is a Priory of Sion and that artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals
are described accurately.  It is that claim that changes things.  In fact, there was no Priory of Sion,
it was simply the result of a historical hoax.
