John is a masterly storyteller, and this story
of Jesus and the woman at the well is one
of his best. The Samaritan woman comes
out of the page, cheeky, brave, vulnerable,
and Jesus responds to her with warmth and
humour, leading her skilfully into confidences,
encouraging her to get beyond the superficial
flirtatiousness that is obviously her natural
conversational medium. All through their talk,
the woman is trying to keep Jesus at a distance
and keep the talk between them jokey. She is
good at the quick repartee, and to begin with...
