To be called by God is a thing of joy and
terror, in about equal measures. The
Corinthians are largely experiencing
the excitement, at present, but their
walk of discipleship will certainly lead
them to sympathize, at times, with the
prophet who speaks in Isaiah 49. The
prophet speaks of his calling as something
about which he had no choice. Like
Jeremiah (see Jeremiah 1.5), this prophet
cannot remember a time when he was
unaware that he had been called by...
