In last Sunday’s Gospel reading (Matthew 3. 1–12),
John the Baptist arrives to herald the beginning of
Jesus’s adult ministry. He is incredibly rude to the
people who flock to hear him preach their
judgement and downfall, and they just love it.
But by this morning’s Gospel reading, they have
tired of him and the uncomfortable truths he tells,
and he is in prison. He sends some of his few
