Description

The Fourth Sunday of Lent

John 3.14-21

Gaze on a dark cellar. You have been trapped inside for ages. It is pitch black in there and there is no switch or bulb hanging overhead to light up your prison. You stumble about feeling the walls, desperate to find a door, or some way out of this desolation. Suddenly there is a flash ahead of you and soon the whole place is illuminated. You flinch at first from the glare for it dazzles you. You freeze with fear, for who might be outside? Is it someone come to rescue you, or is it your enemy? Will you trust the light or shrink back, afraid of the dark but afraid of the risk of going out into the unknown even more?

Consider how John’s language takes us back to the opening of his Gospel: the truth and the light are paramount...
