Luke 11.1-13

Our Father, give us today our daily bread
and all the other wonders you have in store for us.

Luke 11 starts where we all should – ‘One day, Jesus was praying’. The disciples are at a distance, observing him discreetly. Is this in simple curiosity, or in awe? They can tell that when Jesus prays he’s closer to God than when they recite their familiar prayers; they sense that when he returns from his times of prayer, he’s changed, and uplifted, in ways they seldom are. So this time, one of them plucks up the courage to ask ‘Lord, teach us to pray’. In today’s language, whatever he’s got, they want a slice of it...
