Jonah Monologue

So one day God spoke to me. So far so good. He said; “Jonah, go to the city of Nineveh and preach to them because they are living in sin.” (pause and deep breath)  Not so good. You see; as far I was concerned the people of Nineveh were an enemy of God who deserved
everything that was coming to them and I had absolutely no interest in going to give them any kind of warning.
So I headed off to the docks at Joppa and got myself on a boat headed in the opposite direction. What was God going to do Follow me out to sea. Feeling confident that despite God’s efforts to interfere things were now going to work out for the best, and everything was once again right with the world I headed below deck and settled down to get some well earned sleep.

The next thing I knew there were all these people shaking me and asking me how I could sleep through all this. It took me a moment or two to wake up and work out what was going on and what everyone was screaming about in a really quite undignified panicky kind of way.
And it wasn’t helping me concentrate having the boat rocking around violently as if it had been caught in the grip of the most terrifying storm imaginable. However before long I managed to ascertain that the reason everyone was screaming in an undignified panicky kind of way was because the boat had in fact been caught in the grip of the most terrifying storm imaginable.

The prevailing opinion seemed to be that the storm was punishment being bought down upon someone on board the boat and to work out precisely whose actions had caused this terrible vengeful storm to rise up a very carefully thought out and rigorously tested method was used.
