Several people in our church are in their eighties or nineties, and yesterday several things made me think about the lifelong nature of their following Christ. The Gospel passage was Jesus’ story about laborers getting the same pay whether they had worked for the whole day or had worked just an hour. One of these senior members was already at church when I arrived for the first service, feeling as if he was a bit drunk because his blood pressure was low. Another wasn’t there at all because she is suffering with her back and legs, so we took communion to her after the second service. A third was a bit put out because she had missed last week and I had not brought her communion during the week. They are three people who remind me of the men in Jesus’ parable who have been laboring all day long. These three continue to be confident that God will be faithful to them to the end, but they have to deal with the frailty of old age...
