In the seminary where I taught in England, from time to time we would have someone delivering a prophetic message in the context of worship. Generally these messages were reassuring and general, promising people God’s love, protection, and provision. One of my colleagues once commented that two-thirds were trivial, but that one out of three ain’t bad. On a couple of occasions I was given promises for myself that were more concrete and that God indeed honored. On the other hand, for a couple of years in the seminary we had a student who would rather regularly come out with tough (but vague) messages of judgment, and it was a puzzle how to evaluate these. It was complicated by the fact that the “prophet” was a rather angry and bitter person, and it was tempting to infer that he was working out his own issues. Yet God works through personalities, so that would be a dangerous basis on which to ignore him...
