The Third Sunday Before Advent

Jonah.3.1-5, 10
Hebrews 9.24-28
Mark 1.14-20

Hebrews is convinced that the work of Jesus is completed in the cross. And not just the work of the Son of God, but the whole providential work of God in creating us in the first place. The cross of Christ is ‘the end of the age’. Nothing more can ever happen that will change what God has done for us, or replace our triumphant and suffering judge with some other. Remember how this letter starts, like the Gospel of John, with the big picture. Before all else, the Son is with the Father in creating and sustaining the world. He is ‘the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being’ (Hebrews 1.3). It is vital to remember this setting in all that Hebrews goes on to say about the High Priesthood of Christ...
