Gaze on the TV news one day early in
January. It’s the first day of the sales.
The early morning queue is fidgeting,
the clock moves nearer to 9 a.m., an
assistant approaches and at last
opens the door. The crowd, some of
whom slept out on the cold winter
pavement, surge in, a tsunami of greed,
determined to snatch up designer
dresses for a fraction of their cost, the
latest plasma screen for a tenth of its
