Mark 1.4-11

Gaze on a modern-day baptism by total immersion. It might take place in a river, or in a special pool built into a church. The candidates are dressed in clean, crisp white shirts and trousers, and have prepared long and hard for this day. But nothing can prepare them for the slow timid stepping down into the water. Now they have begun, they are committed...

Consider, have we not already heard this story, just a few weeks before Christmas? But consider where we were left then – vaguely anticipating ‘the one you do not know’, who is to come. Now we are ready to progress, for now he stands before us and is named: Jesus comes to be baptized...
