Drama/dialogue: Eastern strangers

(A piece for two voices. The first one reads straight to the audience, as if ignoring the interruptions. The second interacts with the audience, letting them in on the comments and questions. Only in the last three lines do the two speakers relate to each other.)

Magi came from the East …

Well they would, wouldn’t they – with an exotic name like that?

They had seen a special star that had a significant meaning for them …

That’s just the kind of reaction you’d expect from men called Magi, isn’t it?

They decided to follow it …

Well, there you go then. What did I tell you?

They travelled by night …

How surprising! What else would you do if you were following a star? Stars disappear in daylight.

They came to the city of Jerusalem …

Important people usually end up in cities. They like to stick to their own kind.

They went to see the king, Herod …

Told you. Keeping in with the best people.
