Dialogue: Weariness

The weary older one
Oh dear, I am so tired.
And so fed up.
And life seems so pointless.
And I don’t know why I bother.

Do you know, I’ve been working with that church for fifty years or more and what do I have to show for it? Not a lot.
I’m not saying I can’t see what I’ve done. I’ve seen so many youngsters going through that place over the years – I’m on to my third generation with some of them - but so many of them seem to disappear from the place as they grow up. There are too many demands on their time, or they go to university, or to a job somewhere else, or their parents move - or split up – and off they go to who knows where. All I know is that you rarely see them again and you have no idea whether or not they have any belief in God any more. It can be very disheartening.
