OneSound are “really cool”.
One the UK’s vibrant and thrilling ensemble, OneSound took part in their latest event weekend at Castleford in October 2018.
They arrived at Trinity Methodist Church, Castleford at lunch time on Thursday 25th October and received a wonderful e welcome from the church who went out of their way to make the group feel at home. Their OneSound Events Officer, Fiona Green, was their very able Coordinator for the weekend.
Intensive rehearsals led by their Artistic Director, Matt Beckingham began straight away in the church with the odd break for food and sleep until Saturday lunch time.
Pete Amos, of Stream 7 (OneSound’s bass player) and his Audio-Visual crew arrived at Castleford Civic Centre at 8am on Saturday morning to get two van-loads of staging, speakers, lighting, miles of cables and so on onto the stage and concert-ready by 2pm when the main ensemble joined them to rehearse.
This gig at the Civic Centre was in so many ways ground breaking for OneSound. Their theme for our 2017-2018 season was ‘OneSound: One Story, One Song’, which gave the group the opportunity to share their journey from their early MAYC O&S beginnings to where they believe God has led them to today.
But what about the 2018-2019 season?
Matt Beckingham was so inspired by the words of the Hillsong song Future Marches In that he has used it to develop their moving and challenging repertoire for 2018-2019. He wanted to explore where they believe God is leading OneSound in the future.
Throughout the concert, many members had the opportunity to share their testimonies. The gig was accompanied by stunning sound and light elements, which helped to create a worshipful atmosphere for the evening that was truly “cool”.
New songs for this season include All Glory and Gracefully Broken from Matt Redman’s 2017 album Glory Song, as well as My Lighthouse by Northern Irish folk band Rend Collective. Music this season ranges from Tommy Walker’s arrangement of To God Be the Glory, to Blinded by Your Grace by renowned grime artist Stormzy.
At Castleford, OneSound performed to an audience of more than 400 people of all ages, which has to rate as one of the largest audience we’ve experienced for some time.
This concert supported the MHA Music Therapy & Dementia Programme by raising both awareness and funds for this proramme.
OneSound also introduced their new uniform which reflected their new musical repertoire.
Former OneSound secretary, Robin McOwat, was at the gig with his wife Sheila as their special guests, and Robin was so taken with the new uniform that he asked if he could buy a t-shirt. Suffice to say, we gifted him one.
OneSound also produced another first for the group - a glossy Souvenir programme.
Jemma Baldry, our chaplain, ably “assisted” by Ezekiel (her baby son) led two of our Closer sessions on the Hebrew names of God. Jessica Bullett led a Closer session reflecting on the names of the Holy Spirit and OneSound’s chair Martin Sykes led an Agape love feast based on the names of Jesus.
The Sunday morning worship at Trinity Methodist Church was led by OneSound with Martin preaching.
Castleford will go in the annals of OneSound as a greatly blessed gig.

Brian Latham
Sadly, this year we said goodbye to someone who has been Chair, Trustee and supporter of MAYC O&S and latterly OneSound for many years.
Brian Latham’s thanksgiving service at Aylesbury Methodist Church on Monday 2nd July 2018 was of course sad, but also uplifting and inspirational in so many ways. His wife Pauline and son Andrew were truly amazing as they greeted everyone and then played a significant part in giving testimony to Brian’s life, work, and love for his family. He will be greatly missed.
The minister Rev Helen Kirk conducted the service and announced that all donations given in memory of Brian would be donated to OneSound.
The trustees of OneSound have decided to create the Brian Latham Fund with the donations we have received. The fund will be used for specific projects in the future – a fitting legacy for us to honour his memory.
OneSound appear next at Victoria Methodist Church, Bristol, on Saturday 12th January 2019, where we will again perform their ‘The Future Marches In’ programme.
The ensemble will then appear at Park Avenue Methodist Church, Northampton on Saturday 27th April 2019.
