Meditations for Carers
23. Running on empty
Isaiah 40.31
One of the biggest problems and danger areas for carers is tiredness. Exhaustion. Bone-deep weariness that makes you want to sit and weep. This is when you know you’re running on empty.
It’s strange. We don’t shout at our car when it needs to be filled up with petrol, but we do tend to be harsh with ourselves when we’re worn out and there’s still too much to do. Stop. Think petrol. That’s all it is. You’re running on empty and that’s not really possible. When you run your car down to the last dregs, you’re in danger of getting nasty grungy bits stuck in your engine where they can do damage. Same with us. Toxic stuff begins to appear. Obviously, the best thing is never to let the tank get empty – but as any carer knows, that’s simply not realistic.
We all get over-exhausted...
