ONE DAY AT A TIME
Meditations for Carers

11. Hi ho, hi ho!

Matthew 16.24

Many of us tried, in the early days, to explain away the symptoms in our loved ones. We grasped the flimsy straws of the good days and then crashed and burned when our hopes were dashed by another clear sign of the illness or disability.

This is not the way forward. We need acceptance. Surrender. But that is neither defeat nor defeatism. We don’t need to fight what has happened but instead enfold it – and our loved ones – in love and care. This will cushion our loved ones – and ourselves – and enable us to live as happily and successfully as possible with the illness or disability. Because it won’t go away. And it will probably get worse.

Resistance is a waste of energy. This is where you are today...
