In the parish at Madeley there is a book containing the following inscription: 'John Fletcher, clerk, was inducted to the vicarage of Madeley, the 17th of October 1760.' Fletcher commenced his ministry of twenty-five years at Madeley and there he produced his famous Seven Checks to Antinomianism. John Wesley had known John Fletcher for about fifteen years and in 1773 her wrote to John and said there was no one inside Methodism who had all the graces and he wished him to relinquish his vicarage and lead in Wesley's place.
